I haven’t published an article on Medium since April 10. Prior to that, my last article was in January. It’s more than safe to say I’ve fallen off.

The truth is, I fell out of love with Medium. Once upon a time, it was a haven of unique, personal stories from writers who reopened old wounds to spread fresh ideas.

But Medium has always been known for updating its policies, algorithms, and just about everything else. If you don’t change with Medium, you get left behind. And for years, I was OK with that.

However, in my last year of writing on Medium, I noticed not only was my writing changing too much to adapt to Medium — but the suggested articles I was receiving were absolute trash. We’re talking worse than clickbait. Medium’s algo consistently suggested articles about topics I wasn’t interested in and had no real content or meaning. My top hits were haikus about dust (this really happened).

Because I wasn’t offered anything good to read, I found myself writing without reading content from others. When you do that, it sends you down a rabbit hole of only reading your own work. It’s not a good place for any writer.
