Hi! I liked your reply so I figured I'd put two more of my cents in. I agree that students did get something of value in exchange for debt.

However, in today's society a bachelor's degree might as well be a high school diploma. It doesn't hold the same value that it did 20 years ago. But it costs much more, for less value, due to inflation.

Schools are raising the price of tuition every single year and not telling incoming freshman this is what they're signing up for. At the same time, the value of a bachelor's degree is depleting and less students are applying to college in general.

Basically, students are getting far less of a return for their money than they used to. Hence, a clean slate and lower interest rates/ tuition prices in the future is needed to adjust for inflation.
